It is important for a mother to take care of her own oral health as well the oral health of her baby. In fact, she should begin even before the baby is born! This guide outlines the key messages of oral health from pregnancy through the toddler years. Print out your own color brochures to use as a reference during each of these life stages.

  1. Get a dental checkup.
  2. Brush at least twice a day with a toothpaste recommended by your dentist.
  3. Floss daily.
  4. Limit the number of times you eat sweet or starchy snacks.
  5. Seek prenatal care.
  6. Get adequate calcium.
0-6 months
  1. Clean baby's gums daily.
  2. Avoid putting baby to bed with a bottle.
  3. At 6 months, ask your doctor or dentist about supplements.
6-18 months
  1. At between 6 to 12 months, begin using a sippee cup.
  2. The Indian Dental Association recommends that you encourage your child to drink from a cup by his/her first birthday.
  3. Clean baby's teeth daily.
  4. Take baby for first dental checkup at around the first birthday.
18-24 months
  1. Limit the number of times toddler eats sugary snacks each day.
  2. Brush toddler's teeth after breakfast and before bedtime. Begin using a pea-sized dab of a toothpaste recommended by your dentist once toddler can spit out.
  3. Visit the dentist for a checkup.
