When I see children begging on the streets, I am moved. My hands go into my pocket, and then I decide I should not pay them cash, rather I prefer to take them to an eatery where I can feed them ... atleast a 'Vada Pav' . For if I give them cash, I wonder if I am really doing them any good.
There is an old man near my barber shop who belongs to a rich family. However he catches hold of passersby on the road to feed him 'Misal Pav' and Tea. He is mentally ill. He may be rich, but somewhere deep in his heart there is perhaps a craving for being fed with love and compassion. I don't lose an opportunity to pay for his favorite snack - 'Misal Pav' and a cup of tea to go with it.
Every year, I donate some funds to a temple to feed pilgrims. I don't know why I do it ... it just happens from within. Perhaps the ingrained Indian culture that has always placed 'Annadaan ' that translates to 'donating food' as the highest form of charitable acts.
Therefore when I heard about NTP+, an NGO that is working with HIV/AIDS affected children, something stirred in my heart. I thought of supporting the cause by sponsoring a child for his education & monthly ration. I feel that my family earns enough to bear some additional cost to benefit someone and my family supports me for this noble cause. My son is happy to know about this decision of mine, and even at his tender age nods his head in approval - which motivates me to continue to support such worthy causes. |

Reading about 'Extending a hand to HIV Positive Children' in the issue of Mera Colgate, the house journal, awakened me to the realization to do something for these deserving children. It was not the monetary contribution, since the amount involved was less than what one would spend for a dinner in a good restaurant. Neither was it out of pity for these children. It was a concern that these children deserve a meaningful and normal life just as our own children do. The condition in which they are, is not of their making !
It was this desire to make a difference in the life of a child, that I decided to sponsor two children. I am glad that I took this decision, as it supports not only the nutritional needs but also the education of these children. It is not about signing a cheque, I spend time with them to understand their developmental needs and follow their progress. |

A child affected or infected by HIV, is disadvantaged for no fault of his or her. While there is no known cure, we can contribute to keep them healthy with nutritious food to keep full blown AIDS away. It is not us that are at risk - it is they that are at risk from us, being so fragile in health, making them susceptible to illness and bacteria that we so naturally overcome. So for me to sponsor a vulnerable child through the Colgate Pay Roll Giving Program is my way of telling the child I sponsor, I care - Colgate Cares!
I want him to achieve his dreams and will do all I can to make his dreams a reality.
