Several community development initiatives have been implemented in the field of health, education, welfare and recreation with a view to making a difference in the lives of the people in Hetauda, Nepal.
School Infrastructure Support Programme
The company supported a unique Programme by adopting Tribhuwan High School in Hetauda, Nepal, giving the children a safe and healthy environment for learning. Established in 1961 with a strength of 1000 students, the school was in dire need of infrastructure support. Colgate extended its support and built a block of three additional classrooms, which now accommodates over hundred additional students. The adoption Programme has received widespread appreciation and support from the local communities, the district administration and school authorities.
Education:
In the field of education, the company rewards meritorious students from Government Schools with scholarships. This initiative is the first of its kind in Hetauda that awards the top 15 rank holders in standard VIII. The scholarship is given for a period of two years. There have been 270 Colgate Scholars since October 2000.
Health:
The company's commitment to ensuring good health has made a big difference to the residents of Hetauda.
Two clinics are being operated by Colgate since 2001. One clinic provides free medical consultancy thrice a week,
while a dental clinic run in association with the Lion's Club, Hetauda offers its services once a week.
Both the clinics are very successful and widely appreciated by the local communities.
Close to 18,000 people have availed of the medical and dental consultancy since the clinics started.
Understanding the need and difficulties of the people of Chisapani to travel to Hetauda to avail medical services and on public demand,
Colgate started two more Medical clinics in August 2005 - one at Hetauda Industrial District Office and other at Chisapani.
To avoid discomfort to the patients, the nominated doctor visits both the clinics twice a week.
Above 3,000 people have availed this Medical Consultancy
services till date.
Flood Relief:
Makwanpur District witnessed some of the heaviest rains in the year 2003 and 2004. The heavy downpour resulted in flash floods causing destruction to life and property in the district. The only road to Kathmandu, which is the lifeline of the people, was damaged at several places and was blocked by landslides. Many people were rendered homeless. Colgate joined hands with the District Administration, on both occasions to provide assistance to the distressed, and was one of the first to provide 200 bags of dry ration as immediate relief for the flood affected people of the district.
Respect for senior citizens:
To keep the senior citizens abreast with the latest news and make their life more interesting, Colgate, in a gesture of caring established two Newspaper Reading Centres for them at Chisapani and Hetauda.
